Some construction workers have caused "irreversible damage" to a part of the Great Wall of China!
They did it to create a shortcut that makes it easier and faster to do their work.
The incident occurred in Youyu County, in the northern province of Shanxi. Two suspects, a 38-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman, were arrested for using an excavator to widen an existing gap in the wall, with the intention of saving time and distance.
This damaged section of the wall dates back to the Ming Dynasty, built between 1386 and 1644. Police received a tip on August 24 about the damage and immediately investigated the scene.
The Great Wall of China is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has a history spanning over 2,000 years, with parts nearly 3,000 years old.
The individuals who destroyed the part of the wall for shortcuts now face charges related to the destruction of a cultural relic.
