364-kg Alligator Caught in Mississippi River
An alligator more than four meters long was captured and killed in the US state of Mississippi after four hunters tried to capture it for seven hours.
The 364-kilogram alligator was caught in the Yazoo River on the opening day of the 2023 alligator hunting season.
Donald Woods, one of the hunters, told USA Today media that they saw many alligators 8 to 10 feet (2.4 to 3 meters) long but were looking for a bigger one.

"We've been hunting these animals for a long time," he said.
When they found their target and caught it around 9 p.m., they had no idea how big the alligator was.
"We knew it was big," Donalds said.
"It had a very wide back. It felt like we were following a boat."
"We held it for a while, until about 10pm. The alligator broke my rod."
"We kept trying to catch it with the hook, eight or nine times, but it kept staying put... it was hiding behind a log. The crazy thing is, it kept staying in the same place."

This effort continued throughout the night and into the next morning.
As they became mentally exhausted, their tools also became useless.
It wasn't until 4 a.m., when they managed to catch it and put it on the boat, that they realized how big it was.
"The size was impressive, but we didn't think it was anything special at first," Will Thomas told the Washington Post.
"But when we took it down, measured it, and realized it was over 14 feet (4.2 meters) long, our excitement level increased."

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks confirmed that the alligator was 14 feet 3 inches long, or 4.3 meters, with an abdominal circumference of 66 inches or more than 1.5 meters, while the tail reached 46.5 inches or 1.18 meters.
