The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has made a significant discovery.
It just found evidence of carbon-based molecules in the atmosphere of an exoplanet known as K2–18 b.
This exoplanet, located 120 light-years away from our solar system, is intriguing to astronomers because it could potentially be an ocean world with liquid water, a crucial ingredient for life.
K2–18 b is about two to three times larger than Earth and falls within the habitable zone of its star.
Notably, the telescope also detected dimethyl sulfide (DMS), a molecule produced on Earth as a by-product of life, although this detection is less certain.
Scientists aim to identify habitable exoplanets, which could revolutionize our understanding of life in the universe.
The research is an essential step in understanding the atmospheres and conditions of planets like K2–18 b, and further observations will provide more insights into these distant worlds.
